Dropout patterns in dieting trials

Investigators who conduct diet studies seek to minimize subject withdrawal to reduce costs and maximize statistical power. The dropout pattern, as a function of calendar time, may be thought of as a survival problem. The methods of statistical survival analysis are used in a wide range of professional applications. Actuaries use these techniques to understand mortality patterns or life tables and set life insurance premiums. The current research reports secondary findings on drop-out patterns in a clinical trial for which the primary findings compared weight loss from three dieting protocols. This type of survival analysis has been used in tobacco-related analyses to model all-cause and disease-specific mortality and to study modifiable risk factors and maintenance of good health in older adults. This is the first reported application of statistical survival analysis to a clinical trial involving diet.(Continue Reading)
